A practical breakdown of where a Turkish passport travels in 2026 — and what that means for property buyers investing in citizenship.

The short answer
As of 28 August 2026, the live Henley Passport Index ranks Türkiye 49th with access to 112 destinations without a prior consular visa. That figure is not the same as “112 visa-free countries.” Henley counts classic visa-free entry, visa on arrival and electronic travel authority access together, while it excludes eVisas that must be approved before departure.
Different passport databases publish different totals because they count territories, electronic permissions and conditional entry in different ways. A responsible buyer should therefore compare destinations—not headline totals—and verify each trip with the destination government and airline before booking.
What “visa-free” means—and what it does not
Visa-free entry
You normally travel without obtaining a visa before departure. Border officers can still ask for a return ticket, accommodation, sufficient funds, insurance or a minimum period of passport validity. Visa-free access never guarantees admission.
Visa on arrival
You travel without advance consular approval but obtain and sometimes pay for permission at the border. Henley counts this as access without a prior visa because the traveler does not need pre-approval before departure.
Electronic travel authority
An ETA is a digital pre-screening step for travelers who otherwise have visa-free status. It is not usually treated as a visa, but it must be completed before travel. Approval and boarding conditions still apply.
eVisa
An eVisa is a visa applied for online and approved before departure. Henley does not count eVisa destinations in its visa-free score. Marketing pages often combine eVisa with visa-free travel, which inflates the headline number.
Prior visa required
A traveler must secure a visa before departure, often through an online application, visa center or diplomatic mission. The required evidence, processing time and validity vary by destination and purpose.
Where can an ordinary Turkish passport travel more easily?
The examples below are a planning guide, not an exhaustive legal list. They show the regional pattern reflected by current mobility sources. Always run a final destination-specific check for the exact passport type, purpose, route and dates.
Europe and the Balkans
Turkish ordinary-passport holders continue to have comparatively convenient access to several non-Schengen Balkan destinations. Current travel resources commonly include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, North Macedonia and Serbia among the easier-entry options.
Do not assume that one Balkan rule applies to every neighboring country. A particularly important 2026 correction concerns Montenegro: a Turkish Airlines travel article still lists Montenegro among visa-free European destinations, but the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs now states that ordinary Turkish passport holders are subject to a visa. Limited exceptions may apply to travelers holding certain valid residence permits or multiple-entry visas.
The Schengen Area remains a prior-visa market for ordinary Turkish passport holders. In July 2025, the European Commission introduced a more favorable “cascade” for some Turkish applicants with a compliant visa history, allowing progressively longer-validity multiple-entry visas. That change can reduce repeated applications for eligible travelers, but it is not visa-free access.
Asia and the Middle East
A Turkish passport offers useful travel options across parts of East Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East. Common examples in current travel databases include Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Qatar and Jordan.
Entry mechanics are not uniform. One destination may allow classic visa-free entry, another may require an ETA, and another may issue a visa on arrival. South Korea, for example, should be checked for the current electronic pre-travel authorization rules before ticket purchase. Route restrictions can also matter, especially where land and air borders apply different procedures.
Latin America and the Caribbean
The Turkish passport generally provides broad short-stay access across much of South America and parts of Central America and the Caribbean. Frequently listed examples include Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and several Caribbean states.
Length-of-stay limits vary, and visa-free tourism does not authorize work, residence or unrestricted business activity. Some destinations also require onward travel, confirmed accommodation or an entry declaration.
Africa
Access across Africa is mixed. Some destinations admit Turkish ordinary-passport holders visa-free, while others use visa-on-arrival, ETA or eVisa systems. Mauritius, Morocco, South Africa and Seychelles often appear in mobility databases, but each destination has its own passport-validity, onward-ticket and purpose-of-travel rules.
Because electronic entry systems and airline boarding checks change frequently, Africa itineraries should be verified country by country immediately before payment.
Oceania
Access is more limited and fragmented. Some Pacific destinations use visa-on-arrival or electronic permission, while Australia and New Zealand should not be treated as automatic visa-free destinations for ordinary Turkish passport holders. Check the official immigration portal for the exact authorization required.
Important destinations that still require advance planning
Schengen Europe
Ordinary Turkish passport holders remain subject to the Schengen visa regime. A multiple-entry visa may become available under the EU cascade rules after compliant use of previous visas, but eligibility is individual and does not create a general exemption.
United States
Türkiye is not on the United States Visa Waiver Program country list as of 28 August 2026. An ordinary Turkish passport holder therefore should not assume ESTA eligibility and normally needs the appropriate U.S. visa for the intended trip.
United Kingdom
The United Kingdom operates its own nationality and purpose-based rules outside Schengen. Use the official GOV.UK “check if you need a visa” service for the traveler’s exact circumstances before applying or booking.
Canada and Australia
Both countries use nationality-specific visa and electronic-authorization rules. Turkish ordinary-passport holders should check the official immigration service and obtain the required authorization before travel.

Does buying property automatically give you this travel access?
No. Buying property in Türkiye does not itself create Turkish passport rights.
A foreign buyer may become eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship through qualifying real-estate investment only if the official conditions are met. Current official guidance states a minimum real-estate investment of USD 400,000 equivalent, an annotation preventing sale for at least three years, and completion of the citizenship process. Eligibility, valuation, title-deed records, source of funds and application evidence must all be handled correctly.
Travel access begins only after citizenship is granted and the Turkish passport is issued. A reservation, deposit, sales promise, title deed or residence permit is not a passport.
A residence permit is also a separate legal route. Property ownership may support an application in eligible circumstances, but it does not make residence or citizenship automatic.
Turkish passport versus Caribbean investment passports
Headline rankings should not be compared across different dates or methodologies. On the live Henley ranking reviewed on 28 August 2026, Türkiye is shown at 49th with 112 destinations, while St. Kitts and Nevis is shown at 20th with 158 destinations.
